About Our Pastoral Charge
A community of faith rooted in the traditions of the United Church of Canada and the heritage of Newfoundland.
Faith, Heritage, and
Community Together
Whitbourne Pastoral Charge is a congregation of the United Church of Canada, faithfully serving the communities of Norman's Cove, Angels Cove, and the broader Trinity Bay South region of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Our charge brings together the traditions of Methodism, Congregationalism, and Presbyterianism — the three streams that united in 1925 to form the United Church of Canada — and carries their shared commitment to an inclusive, justice-seeking, and community-centred faith.
We are proud of our deep roots in Newfoundland culture: the spirit of resilience, neighbourliness, and generosity that defines outport life is the same spirit that animates our congregation week after week.
Our Core Values
These values are not aspirations but active commitments — lived out Sunday after Sunday in worship, service, and care.
Inclusive Welcome
We believe that everyone belongs — regardless of background, age, ability, or life experience. Our doors, our table, and our community are open to all.
Compassionate Service
Following the example of Christ, we respond to the needs of our neighbours with practical help, pastoral care, and a listening ear.
Spiritual Depth
We pursue a living faith — one that grows through worship, prayer, scripture study, and honest conversation about what it means to follow Christ today.
Community Belonging
In a world of increasing isolation, we nurture authentic relationships where people know one another's names and walk together through every season of life.
Faithful Stewardship
We honour the gifts of creation, treasure, and talent entrusted to us — caring for the natural world, our facilities, and the people in our charge.
Justice and Reconciliation
We commit to the difficult and necessary work of reconciliation — with Indigenous peoples, with our environment, and within our own community.
The Communities
We Serve
A Pastoral Charge in the United Church of Canada is a geographic area served by a shared ministry. Whitbourne Pastoral Charge encompasses several small communities nestled along the shores of Trinity Bay South — each with its own character, history, and congregation.
-
Norman's Cove–Long Cove — the heart of the Charge, home to our primary meeting place along NL-201.
-
Angels Cove — our registered address and an historic outport community with deep Methodist roots.
-
Whitbourne Area — the broader service town giving the Charge its name, and a hub for regional gatherings.
-
Surrounding Communities — our pastoral care extends to all residents of Trinity Bay South in need of support.
Part of the United Church of Canada
The United Church of Canada is the country's largest Protestant denomination, formed in 1925 through the union of Methodist, Congregationalist, and most Presbyterian churches. It is a progressive, inclusive denomination committed to social justice, environmental stewardship, and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
As a Pastoral Charge within this tradition, we share in the United Church's national ministries while remaining firmly grounded in the specific needs, relationships, and heritage of Trinity Bay South. Our worship draws on both ancient liturgical tradition and contemporary expressions of faith.
"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer."Acts 2:42
